Do you ever have somebody close to you tell you something that is so completely wrong yet you feel bad telling them they’re not even close to right?
I had that happen with a friend and fellow cigar enthusiast. He’s Cuban, born there and loves cigars from all over. He and I were having a conversation with another Cuban guy and we started talking about the Cigars from Altadis and General Cigar Companies, they feature the same names and logos as the Cuban brands, however they are absolutely NOT CUBAN. Not even close.
I’ve been in the business for sometime now and I know my shit, if you ask me I can always give you accurate information, if I can’t I will tell you and find out for you. However my friend tells this other Cuban guy that those brands are ACTUALLY Cuban and re-banded in the U.S., this is wrong. It’s completely wrong. I kind of raised an eyebrow and he turns and says “You knew that….RIGHT?” and I’m like “Ugh, never heard that”. He says “Come on, everyone knows that”.
This is bad info it is not true at all. Yet I would have felt like a dick pointing it out because he’s such a close friend. If the opportunity arises and he says that again, I’ll wait until it’s him and I and let him know it’s wrong. It’s harmless him telling people that, but I don’t want people hearing it and spending their hard earned money thinking it’s a Cuban. It’s not Cuban and their are plenty of other great brands out there for the money.
