As some of you may know I’m a big Horror and Science Fiction movie fan, specifically B Movies (Budget movies). In 1994 I saw the Tim Burton movie titled Ed Wood which cataloged the life of B Movie, writer – director – producer, Edward D. Wood Jr., while he was making films such as Glen or Glenda, Bride of The Monster, and Plan 9 From Outer Space. After watching Ed Wood I started seeking out his films eventually finding a box set of them on VHS at Suncoast Motion Pictures in the mall. The box set featured Plan 9 From Outer Space, Glen or Glenda, and Bride of The Monster. The box was wrapped in faux pink Angora. Ed Wood fancied Angora sweaters. Anyway, at this point you’re probably already bored with reading so I will “get on with it.”
Last night I had the great pleasure of viewing the Ed Wood classic Plan 9 From Outer Space on the big screen thanks to a Fathom Event which teamed up with the fellas from Mystery Science Theater 3000. The movie started and Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett (Crow T Robot, Tom Servo, and MST3K writer) took stage to begin their hysterical riffing of the movie. These guys went on for a solid hour and change making fun of the movie, adding commentary, and just plain babbeling in the spirit of MST3K.
I have seen this movie so many times that I was able to point out stuff which was messed up about the movie, since Ed Wood was notorious for shooting a scene once and then printing it w/o fixing errors. Some of the notable errors are where the Police car is speeding to the cemetery and when they cut it’s dark in the cemetery and then when they cut back to the Police car it’s light again. Another notable scene in the graveyard is when the cross headstone is kicked over and you can see the stand it’s on because it was made from flimsy wood.
I am a huge fan of both Plan 9 and MST3K so this evening was something I had been looking forward to for a week and even though Danielle thought I was taking it too serious (because she is a poopy head), I had a blast and am glad that I went. I laughed my ass off for almost an hour and a half and the guys from MST3K really made this event something fucking cool. I hope that the guys at Fathom and Rifftrax decide to do some more events like this one, especially more Ed Wood movies.
